IOS welcomes new faculty members

The IOS would like to welcome 4 new faculty members and 1 new affiliate member! Prof. Dwight Seferos from the Department of Chemistry; Prof. Tim Bender from the Department of Chemical Engineering; Prof. Olivier Trescases from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Prof. Joshua N. Milstein from the Department of Physics, have all joined as full members, and Dr. Anil Kishen from the Faculty of Dentistry has joined as an affiliate member.

Canada Post unveils stamp of IOS faculty member John Polanyi

As part of the City of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche celebration on October 1st, Canada Post is releasing a limited edition stamp in honour of Nobel Laureate, IOS faculty member, and University of Toronto professor, John Polanyi. Polanyi is one of three winners of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in recognition of the development of the new field of reaction dynamics and was cited for his pioneering work in developing the method of infrared chemiluminescence.

Michael Montgomery Wins NSERC Innovation Challenge Award

Michael Montgomery, IOS Commercialization Fellow and founder of Kinetica Dynamics, has won the NSERC Innovation Challenge Award for the research he conducted during his PhD at the University of Toronto Department of Civil Engineering. With his supervisor and co-founder Prof. Constantin Christopoulos, Michael developed a new way to dampen vibrations in high-rise buildings caused by wind or earthquakes, and Kinetica Dynamics is now on its way to change the way high-rise buildings are constructed. Congratulations Michael!

Prof. Dwayne Miller receives Royal Society’s McNeil Medal

Professor Dwayne Miller of the Department of Chemistry and former Director of the IOS has been awarded the McNeil Medal, which recognizes outstanding ability to promote and communicate science to students and the public within Canada. Miller is being honoured specifically “for his dedication to the promotion of science throughout his career and as a founder of Science Rendezvous. This event provides a single voice behind which all the sciences have rallied across the nation to teach the public about the importance of science to society and to make the joys of science accessible.”

Lumentra receives FedDev Ontario ARC grant

On August 31st, Mr. Costas Menegakis, member of Parliament for Richmond Hill, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, minister of state for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, at Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone. This grant will help Lumentra, an IOS resident company, to implement its technical quality management program and obtain ISO accreditation for its technical services arm.

The Solid State Lighting Network was created by the IOS to catalyze Canadian adoption of new Solid State Lighting (SSL) technology by bringing together researchers, industries, end-users and public agencies.

The Techno2012 workshop series teaches young entrepreneurs in the physical sciences and engineering to successfully translate their scientific discoveries into commercializable products and services.
